Description

Looking east down High Street, before 1900, likely taken from the roof of the Shaw Block. The Cotton Brown house at left was moved east to make way for the construction of the Lane Block and is now the office of Tobey & Merrill Insurance. At right is the Merrill Block building, built in 1889, which was home to J.W. Mason and Company. John Mason moved his store there from another location on Exeter Road shortly after the Merrill Block was built. The shoe factory, with smokestack, was built in 1887 and can be seen in the distance at left. The building with a spire in the distant right is Hampton Academy.
