Description

A view west on Winnacunnet Road, in the vicinity of Park Avenue. The trolley cars are at Young's Turnout, a section of track that branched off briefly from the main line to allow two trolleys to pass each other. The rise of the automobile led to a steep decline in revenues for the trolley company by 1920, and in a special town meeting that December the Town of Hampton voted to purchase the trolley line. Operated primarily as a public transportation service for tourists, the line continued to lose money until finally, in 1926, it was voted during a town meeting to discontinue it, leaving a large debt to be paid. The last car ran on January 26, 1926.
