Description
The Union House, before 1890. Located at the north comer of Lafayette and Winnacunnet Roads, this hotel was built about 1816-17 by Josiah Dearborn on the site of Leavitt's Tavern, which began operation in the mid-1700s. First called Josiah Dearborn's inn, then Samuel Dearborn's Inn (after Josiah's son), it was renamed the Railroad House in 1840 in honor of the construction of the first rail line through Hampton. In 1859 or 1860, under new ownership, it became the Union House. A large wing was added in 1886, enabling the hotel to accommodate from eighty to one hundred guests. In 1890 it was renamed the Hotel Whittier.
