Description

The Lafayette Road bridge over the Taylor River, near the border with Hampton Falls, ca. 1896. The Hampton Causeway Turnpike Corporation was formed in 1808 to build a permanent road over the marshes to Hampton Falls. For a number of years it was a toll road, which aggravated so many travelers that a crude bridge called the "shunpike" was thrown over the river farther upstream. Despite the more circuitous route, many people preferred taking the free road over paying a toll. The towns of Hampton and Hampton Falls purchased the road and bridge from the corporation in 1826, for a price of $5,000, after which the "turnpike" became a free road.
